The health care bill that passed the Senate will require that private, for-profit insurance companies offer their products to a pool of around 33 million new customers. Those customers are required to purchase the insurance, even if they don’t want it. For those that can’t quite afford the insurance, a subsidy will be provided. Those that refuse will be fined, but will still be able to purchase the insurance if and when they need it. So first, those private companies stand to make billions in new profits from this untapped market, especially when one considers that some of those who will be required to purchase the insurance won’t need to use it, at least for a while, so their payments will be strictly, pure profit.
